Ticino: one of the richest cantons in history, tradition and culture. In this article we try to summarize the main points of interest of Ticino, from the fabulous castles to the most suggestive valleys of the canton. If you don’t know how to spend your summer days, these destinations are ideal for spending family moments with a comfortable trip out of town. For completeness we have selected several profiles of different destinations, so that we can satisfy both those who prefer to visit cities, castles or museums, and those who prefer destinations suitable for a simple day of relaxation.
CASTELLO DI MONTEBELLO, BELLINZONA
The castle is located about 90 meters above the city level. It also stands on the hill of Montebello. The medieval complex in which it is included has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The first mention of its existence dates back to 1313, but the biggest enlargements of the structure were made between the 60s and the 90s of 1400. After changing several names, such as “Schwyz Castle” and “St. Martin’s Castle”, it was purchased by the Canton Ticino in 1903, on the occasion of the centenary of Ticino’s independence.
Today the castle houses the archaeology and history section of the Civic Museum.
PIAZZA DELLA RIFORMA, LUGANO
Its name can be attributed to the constitutional reform of 1830, and today it represents the main pole of the city of Lugano. The main building on the square is the town hall, built in the 1840s. Previously another building overlooked Piazza della Riforma: the theatre, today unfortunately demolished. Still today the square is used for the main events organized. If you pass through Lugano you cannot miss a visit to this beautiful square, the fulcrum of the whole city.
CASTELLO VISCONTEO – MUSEO CIVICO E ARCHEOLOGICO, LOCARNO
It is not easy to define precisely when it was built, but construction probably began in 1342. It was the Visconti family who conquered the castle and enlarged it for the first time. However, the most important fortification works were carried out by the Rusca family around the middle of 1400. With the victory of the confederates the castle was almost completely demolished in 1532, and its present appearance is the result of the restoration of 1923 by Edoardo Berta. Today the building is the seat of the civic and archaeological museum, famous above all for its collection of Roman glass.
PALAZZO CIVICO, BELLINZONA
Today’s building stands on the area of the pre-existing town hall, demolished to make room for the current building. Inaugurated in 1929, the civic palace was studied and designed by Enea Tallone. Today very little remains of the previous structure, because its situation of degradation was such that the choice was made to remake and rebuild it. In its typically Swiss-Italian style, this building tried to remain faithful to the tradition of the previous one, thanks to the great skill of the craftsmen involved. The town hall is certainly one of the most important places to visit in Bellinzona.
CHIESA PREPOSITURALE DEI SANTI PIETRO E PAOLO, BIASCA
The church is situated on a hill overlooking the village, and represents the mother church of the 3 Ambrosian valleys (Leventina, Blenio and Riviera). The building was probably built as a baptismal font around the 9th century, and was transformed into a 3-aisle church between the 12th and 13th centuries. The building can also be reached on foot via steps and is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Canton Ticino.
VALLE VERZASCA
If you prefer walking or relaxing afternoons, the Verzasca Valley is for you. Known for its crystal clear water trails, it is included in the district of Locarno and touches the municipalities of Mergoscia, Vogorno, Corippo, Lavertezzo, Brione Verzasca, Cugnasco-Gerra, Frasco and Sonogno. The valley offers some of the most beautiful landscapes you have ever seen, and will allow you to spend a relaxing day in the Swiss mountains. Between streaked rocks, crystal clear waters, canyons and imposing mountains, the Verzasca Valley is now well known not only in Switzerland but also in northern Italy.
SWISSMINIATUR
We are talking about a theme park located in Melide, on the shores of Lake Ceresio. The park looks like a “Switzerland in miniature” hosting more than 120 1:25 scale models of all the most important buildings and points of interest in the country. For those who are passionate about model making, more than 3500 metres of miniature railways wind through the park. A visit to Swissminiatur might be a curious idea for you and your family.
SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA DEL SASSO, ORSELINA
This sanctuary is one of the most famous religious and pilgrimage destinations in Switzerland. A true historical, artistic and spiritual heritage. Its construction began in the 15th century and was completed in the 17th century. In addition to its historical and religious value, the church, from the top of the “pebble” on which it stands, allows us to enjoy the fantastic view of the mountains of Locarno and beyond. Today it also serves as a starting point for walks or hikes in the mountains. The perfect place to visit for a relaxing itinerary suitable for everyone.
CASTELGRANDE, BELLINZONA
The castle is part of the same medieval complex as the castle of Montebello. The first fortification was erected in 15 B.C. by the Emperor Augustus, and was later enlarged by the Romans.
