The small and magnificent village of Morcote, located on the waters of Lake Ceresio in the Canton Ticino, hides a small, little-known treasure: the wonderful Scherrer Botanical Park.
Hermann Arthur Scherrer (1881-1956) was a merchant and in St. Gallen, the town where he was born, he opened a men’s fashion shop, selling tailoring items, uniforms for officers, riding suits and sports clothes, and fabrics.
After attending the weaving school, which allowed him to learn about the vast field of textiles, in 1907 he moved to Munich where he took over his father’s shop, also a merchant, turning it into one of the most elegant and specialized in fashion in the city.
Thanks to his work as a merchant, Hermann Arthur Scherrer traveled the world, discovering exotic and tropical places that enchanted him to the point of wanting to reproduce them in his residence.
This extraordinary park, called “Il Giardino delle Meraviglie” houses a rich collection of art objects from various countries and different eras, which fully reflect the character of Scherrer, a romantic travel lover and art lover.
The whole is located in a dense luxuriant vegetation, in an impressive world of subtropical flora including palms, camellias, wisterias, oleanders, magnolias, azaleas, orange trees, lemons and bamboo.
Among the numerous structures that can be observed in the park there are
-1: 4 scaled copy of the Erechtheum, the second temple of the Acropolis in Athen
-Indian building built on the model of Palazzo Salò.
-Egyptian temple of Nefertiti.
-A typical Lombard-Ticino house of the 1300s
-Venetian ornamental fountain and the Renaissance one in Carrara marble.
-The Temple of the Sun, of Spanish origin.
-Siamese style tea house
-This park is part of the prestigious chain of the “Great Italian Gardens” due to its beauty and particularity.
